Welcome to ALCOSAN

Welcome to ALCOSAN, where we are 3 Rivers Proud.

Here at the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority, we serve residential and industrial users in 83 municipalities, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, making sure that the wastewater leaving your homes and businesses is cleaned before it is returned to the region’s waterways.

We’ve done some research, and what we learned is that we are strangers to many of you. In a survey conducted for us, 1,248 adults from Allegheny County were asked about ALCOSAN, and only 44 percent of them were even somewhat familiar with us.  Additionally, 68 percent of the participants had never heard about ALCOSAN’s Clean Water Plan, a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure improvement strategy that will make sure our rivers and streams are clean, safe and healthy for generations to come.

Why do most of Allegheny County’s residents need to know about it? There are many reasons. There may be disruption on streets near your homes or businesses as work on sewers is undertaken. That may occur when green projects are being installed to use rain gardens, specialized plantings and other means to direct rainfall away from sewers. The cost of the upgrades will be reflected in ALCOSAN’s rates. But, ALCOSAN has created a fund to help families pay those bills. In the coming months, I hope you will allow me to explain how we got here, what is at stake and what everyone can do to help solve this vast problem. We don’t have the luxury of throwing up our hands and leaving it to others, and we don’t have time to keep kicking the can of responsibility down the road.

That’s why you can expect to see and hear more about us in the coming days and months.

We will be explaining in detail just what will be going on in your neighborhoods to make the rivers cleaner and how you can contribute.

In adopting 3 Rivers Proud as our organization’s philosophy, we are saying that ALCOSAN is proud to be a part of the region and proud to contribute to the environmental health of our most significant natural resource, our waterways. Pittsburgh was founded because it sits at the junction of three rivers, so recognizing ALCOSAN’s role in protecting those rivers means we are a fundamental link in the chain of civic pride, livability and future economic prosperity.

I hope you will check back often to my blog on this site to see what is new and learn how you can join us in creating the healthy future that our children and grandchildren deserve.
